Judy Ann Parcels, born May 14, 1942, of Jackson Heights, Queens, passed away at the age of 83 on September 21, 2025, at Mount Sinai Hospital, Queens, in the loving arms of her husband, Miguel Cuevas.
She dedicated her life to family, community, and children. While raising her youngest son, she became a beloved figure in her neighborhood. Known as the “mother of the block,” her home was always open, welcoming children from all around. She filled it with warmth, Capri Suns, grilled cheese sandwiches, and countless snacks, creating a space where joy and laughter thrived—even in times of hardship.
Her greatest passion was children—both through her career as a teacher and her personal life, where she lovingly cared for the neighborhood kids of Jackson Heights.
In her later years, she embraced new joys. She joined the Senior Stars choir and The Melodians, where her love of music shined, and participated in Silver Sneakers exercise classes, staying active and connected. Independent and spirited, she never owned a car or a driver’s license, yet she walked everywhere—whether to singing groups, exercise classes, or local grocery stores—even well into her late seventies.
In her early eighties, Judy was diagnosed with ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease), a devastating illness that slowly took her ability to walk, speak, and connect in the deeply social ways that defined her. Despite this, her enduring love for people, conversation, and community left an indelible mark on everyone she encountered.
She is survived by her husband, Miguel Cuevas, her sons, Marion Cuevas and Gary Moratti, and four grandchildren, who will forever cherish her memory and the love she poured into their lives.
Judy will be remembered for her kindness, her boundless generosity, and her unwavering love for children and family. Her presence transformed a modest home into a haven of love, laughter, and belonging.
Her memory will live on in all whose lives she touched
